We see a considerable number of people with headaches in our Yakima, WA office, and Dr. Bill Kroner has been able to provide relief for many of them. Actually, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that one half of all adults have difficulties with some type of headache problem, so this certainly isn’t unexpected. One of the most prevalent types of headaches which our patients experience is cervicogenic headache which, luckily for us, chiropractic can commonly help.
What is a Cervicogenic Headache?
A cervicogenic headache is one that starts from a problem in the cervical spine. It can be thanks to a problem with either the spine itself (primarily, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it may be attributable to a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This dysfunction in your spine can cause squeezing or aggravation of the spinal nerves, which can generate headache pain.
How do you determine if the headache you are experiencing is a cervicogenic headache? Besides receiving a diagnosis from a healthcare expert, a frequent symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or discomfort in your neck. This is occasionally followed by pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.
How Chiropractic Helps with Cervicogenic Headaches
Because cervicogenic headaches will not go away until whatever issue is initiating them is corrected, it is vital to receive treatment as opposed to just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an excellent approach, and one that offers a considerable amount of pain relief.
In one study published in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, specialists studied 80 people who had repeated cervicogenic headaches. Half of them got chiropractic care and the other fifty percent engaged in light massage therapy. Each participant was assessed 12 and 24 weeks after the treatment and it was discovered that chiropractic provided the best results.
In particular, this study noted that chiropractic adjustments gave patients better pain relief and reduced the number of headaches that occurred. In addition, it also lessened the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.
